NC State Student Government has recently passed the “Trans Inclusive Syllabi Act”. This act encourages professors to add an optional syllabi clause (quoted below) supporting transgender students and offering to use preferred name and/or pronouns upon request. Adding said syllabi clause will not only make the classroom a more affirming place for transgender students, but will also break down potential communication barriers between faculty and transgender students.
Proposed optional syllabi clause:
“In an effort to affirm and respect the identities of transgender students in the classroom and beyond, please contact me if you wish to be referred to using a name and/or pronouns other than what is listed in the student directory.”
