The Campus Writing and Speaking Program invites you to a graduate student interactive conversation with Dr. Elizabeth Wardle, “Considering Threshold Concepts in Your Graduate Education: Liminality and ‘Doctorateness'” from 12-1:00 pm on Tuesday, April 24th in room 138 of the 1911 Building.
This event may be especially of interest to those approaching or in the thesis and/or dissertation phase, regardless of focus area or discipline.
In this interactive conversation “Considering Threshold Concepts in Your Graduate Education: Liminality and ‘Doctorateness’,” we will overview the threshold concepts framework, paying special attention to how learners move from pre-liminal to post-liminal spaces around threshold concepts in their disciplines. Drawing on work about threshold concepts for doctoral students, we will consider some possibly troublesome “stuck places,” including methodologies and conceptual frameworks for dissertation work. Dr. Wardle is Howe Professor and Director of Roger and Joyce Howe Center for Writing Excellence at the University of Miami Ohio. Previously, she was Chair of the Department of Writing and Rhetoric at the University of Central Florida (UCF), and Director of Writing Programs at UCF and University of Dayton. These experiences fed her interest in how students learn and repurpose what they know in new settings. With Linda Adler-Kassner, she is co-editor of Naming What We Know: Threshold Concepts of Writing Studies, winner of the WPA Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Discipline (2016).
